Conditional Formatting + Sheets + Personalized Learning

February 23, 2020

I’ll admit it: I am a Conditional Formatting nerd.

This past week, my team started looking for new ways to track student progress on personalized learning pathways and project-based learning phases. One of our team members created a Google Sheet tracking document that had a space to track completion of various tasks throughout each pathway.

We started looking for ways to conditionally format the document in order to quickly (and efficiently and as hands-off as we could be) see where each student was. Alas, we couldn’t figure it out on our own so we turned to the Google Sheets Help Forum.

A very awesome person responded with the formulas that we needed and voila! we had everything we needed!

If you look at the example above, and on the sample sheet here, depending on how many checkboxes a student has it changes the shading of their name cell. In just a few seconds, you can quickly see where students are at in the process.

Here are the formulas that we used:

=sum(arrayformula(--b2:g2))>=6
Completed
=sum(arrayformula(--b2:g2))>=4
Completed Phase 1 & 2
=sum(arrayformula(--b2:g2))>=2
Completed Phase 1

This revelation has some serious implications and is already being used in our space. I cannot wait to see how this idea continues to evolve!
